Didn’t San Giuseppe Cottolengo minister to those that other hospitals wouldn’t accept? Here stands the Chiesa di San Giuseppe Cottolengo in Palermo. It is a testament to faith and charity. This parish church is in the Malaspina-Palagonia neighborhood. It serves as a spiritual anchor for the community.

The church’s story began with a vision. It was officially decided to build it on March 23, 1956. Construction took place between 1957 and 1960. The Chiesa di San Giuseppe Cottolengo was dedicated in November 1961. It serves a large area with about 10,000 residents.

Before the church, the area was full of citrus groves. A railway line cut through the landscape. Houses were along Via Malaspina. They formed an agricultural village typical of Palermo. In the mid-1950s, a residential complex was built near Via Palagonia. It was considered a model neighborhood. It included green spaces and amenities. This development led to rapid urbanization. The area transformed from agricultural to residential. Many middle-class families moved in.

The Chiesa di San Giuseppe Cottolengo is dedicated to its namesake. San Giuseppe Benedetto Cottolengo founded the Little House of Divine Providence. His liturgical feast is celebrated on April 30. The church celebrates its dedication every November.

Inside the Chiesa di San Giuseppe Cottolengo, art enriches the spirit. Michele Dixit’s works were once prominently displayed. A religious piece called “The Baptism of Jesus” was once in the sacristy. Dixit’s altarpiece depicting San Giuseppe Cottolengo was damaged over time. In November 2020, restoration began. Agata Basile led the effort. On November 12, 2021, the restored altarpiece returned. “The Baptism of Jesus” and a third work dedicated to Beato Pino Puglisi were added.

San Giuseppe Benedetto Cottolengo was born in 1786. He showed a commitment to helping the poor. He understood his vocation was charity. Cottolengo sold everything to rent two rooms. He offered free housing to a paralyzed elderly person. Soon, the premises became a center for those rejected by hospitals.

When cholera broke out, authorities closed the hospital. Cottolengo bought a house outside the city. This marked the beginning of the Little House of Divine Providence. Thanks to benefactors, he established an orphanage. Cottolengo founded monasteries and communities. His legacy of charity continues in Turin.

Cottolengo contracted typhoid while caring for patients. He died in 1842. He was beatified in 1917 and canonized in 1934. He is invoked against infectious and liver diseases.

The Chiesa di San Giuseppe Cottolengo stands as a reminder. It embodies Cottolengo’s dedication. It serves the community through faith, art, and service.
