Hidden among the tranquil streets of Ohara, a picturesque village in Kyoto, stands Ebumi Shrine, a testament to the enduring spirit of Shinto faith. It is an ancient place, its origins shrouded in the mists of time. The exact date of its founding remains unknown, but it is believed to be the successor of Itada-jinja Shrine, mentioned in historical documents. Ebumi Shrine, however, stands at the foot of Mount Konpira, its location a testament to the shifting sands of time.

Ebumi Shrine’s most significant deity is Ujigami, the guardian spirit of the nearby village of Oharano. Originally, it worshipped together with Bishamon-do Ebumi Temple, an interesting reflection of the blending of Shinto and Buddhist traditions in Japan. You can feel the strong female presence in the shrine, which enshrines Konohana Sukuyahime, goddess of Mount Fuji. It is also understood to enshrine the empress and princess of Ebumi Shrine, known together as Himemiya.

The shrine is a humble place, its main building a storehouse for the mikoshi, which is paraded around the village on May 5th each year. The storehouse overshadows the shrine itself, perhaps reflecting the shrine’s quiet but enduring presence in the community. Ebumi Shrine, a place of peace and tranquility, is a reminder of the deep connection between humans and the natural world.
