Before you stands Jackson Park a green space with a rich history. This park offers a tranquil escape right here in Detroit. Once, much of Chicago’s shoreline including parts of Jackson Park was underwater during the 19th century.

Jackson Park’s story starts in the 1850s. The vision for Jackson Park began to materialize in 1865. South Side leaders like Paul Cornell pushed for a great south park system. This system would include Jackson Park.

Initially called Lake Park it was later named for former President Andrew Jackson. In 1869 the South Park Commission was created. This commision was to develop and manage the park. What would become Jackson Park was a 593-acre Eastern Division.

Landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted found great promise in its proximity to Lake Michigan. Olmsted’s original plan was adopted in May 1871. However the Great Fire put funding for further development on hold.

In 1881 Lake Park was officially named Jackson Park. This renaming after Andrew Jackson caused controversy. Many Hyde Parkers were not happy about naming their park after a Democrat.

Jackson Park became the site for the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893. A “White City” of neoclassical structures transformed the park. After the Exposition, the site reverted to parkland.

Jackson Park has seen many changes. Additions include the first public golf course west of the Allegheny Mountains in 1899. The expansion of lakefront beaches occurred in the 1900s. The Japanese-style Osaka Garden was built in 1935.

Today Jackson Park is a place for recreation and relaxation. Visitors can enjoy its lush greenery. They can admire its historic landmarks. They can experience the beauty of the Osaka Garden. The park was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
