Dedicated to the memory of 755 students and staff who died in World War I the University of Glasgow Memorial Chapel stands as a powerful testament. It’s a breathtaking structure. It sits within the West Quadrangle of the university’s Main Building. Consecrated in 1929 this beautiful Scots Gothic chapel was designed by the renowned architect John James Burnet. Construction began in 1914 but was interrupted by the war. Work resumed in 1923. It was finally completed in 1929.
The University Memorial Chapel wasn’t just a building project. It was a deeply felt response to immense loss. Principal Donald MacAlister eloquently expressed the sentiment. He wanted the chapel to be a place of worship. A place where the example of those who died might inspire future Glasgow students. The names of those lost are recorded on tablets within the chapel. Additional tablets commemorate the 405 members of the university community who perished in World War II. The University Memorial Chapel stands as a solemn tribute to their sacrifice.
The interior is stunning. It boasts exquisite wooden stalls and carvings created by Archibald Dawson. A series of ten stained-glass windows enhances the space. This beautiful window is situated above the communion table. It was designed by Lawrence Lee and installed in 1962.
