Whispers of a forgotten sledding hill drift on the wind. Bockholter See is not just a body of water. It’s a mirror reflecting layers of history. Look closer.

Bockholter See sits nestled within the Bockholter Berge a nature reserve. It wasn’t always a tranquil spot. In the 1970s the hills surrounding Bockholter See were a popular sledding spot for Münster’s youth. Katrin Jäger a local author remembers those days. She recalls thrilling rides ending nearly in barbed wire. Today trees stand where the sledding hill once was. The Bockholter Berge still draws visitors for walks throughout the year. Autumn is particularly beautiful with colorful leaves and sometimes blooming heather.

The area around Bockholter See boasts a rich natural history. The Bockholter Berge were formed by glacial meltwater from the last Ice Age. Sand layers deposited by the Ems River created the hills. By 1850 open heathland dominated the landscape. Around 1900 most of the area was afforested. However the unique character of the Bockholter Berge remains. Protecting the area was important. It became a protected area in 1939 one of the oldest in the Kreis Steinfurt. The diversity of wildlife and plant life is remarkable. The area contains varied habitats from forests to sandy dunes and heathland. Threatened species like the woodlark. the kingfisher the black woodpecker and the common lizard have found homes there. The area is carefully managed. Overgrown areas are cleared to preserve the heathland. Bentheim sheep help keep the vegetation down. This ensures the survival of this unique landscape and the species that depend on it.

The tranquility of Bockholter See belies its past. A darker chapter in its history involves the execution of two Polish prisoners of war. In 1942 they were hanged near the Schifffahrter Damm. Accusations of relations with German women led to their deaths. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of wartime atrocities. Even nature reserves carry echoes of the past.

The Bockholter See is more than just a lake. It is a heart of nature a haven for wildlife. It is a place where history whispers. It’s a place where the past and present intertwine a testament to the enduring beauty and resilience of nature. Visit Bockholter See and let the stories unfold.
