Pedrouços da Maia is a parish within the municipality of Maia. It has a rich history dating back to pre-Roman times. Imagine settlements here from the first century BC. Romans Suebi Visigoths and Arabs all found refuge here.

As the County of Portugal sought independence barons from Entre Douro e Minho played a key role. After the Battle of São Mamede in 1128 Afonso Henriques divided the “Lands of Maia”. He gifted Maia to Gonçalo Mendes da Maia. He gave the castle to Soeiro Mendes da Maia. Águas Santas went to Paio Mendes da Maia. Pedrouços then became part of Águas Santas.
In 1743 the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Natividade was built. It likely replaced an older temple. People made promises to the Virgin. In 1928 it became the seat of the parish of Pedrouços. Today it is a significant cultural landmark.
After years of struggle Pedrouços separated from Águas Santas. On June 14 1980 residents submitted a proposal to elevate Pedrouços to a parish. Almost five years later on May 23 1985 the Parish Assembly of Águas Santas approved the change. It took effect on October 4 1985.
Pedrouços boasts a cultural heritage. This includes the Church of Nossa Senhora da Natividade. There is also the Casa de Augusto Simões. Despite a population of over 12000 Pedrouços lacks a police station. The nearest one is in Águas Santas. The Festa da Nossa Senhora da Natividade is a popular annual festival. It attracts many visitors.
