Nicolae Bretan’s life was remarkable. He studied at conservatories in Cluj Vienna and Budapest. He became a leading baritone at the Bratislava Opera. He also earned a degree in Philology from Cluj University. His career spanned various roles. He served as a director at the Hungarian Opera in Cluj. He later led the Romanian Opera in Cluj after its return from wartime refuge in Timisoara.

Bretan’s musical legacy is extensive. He composed 230 songs. The lyrics were from Romanian German and Hungarian poets. He created five operas. One notable work is the symphonic vocal poem Luceafarul. He also composed numerous religious works. A requiem for two soloists or choir and organ is among them. Four of his operas were one-act pieces: Golem Arald Eroii de la Rovine and Horia. Golem premiered in Switzerland in 1990.

The sculptor Ana Rus created this impressive work. The statue stands as a lasting tribute to Bretan’s contributions. It’s a unique feature for a school in Bucharest.
