Gazing at Torrance High School, can you believe it’s been a backdrop for countless movies and TV shows? Welcome to one of California’s oldest continuously operating high schools. Torrance High School opened its doors on September 11, 1917. It initially served as both a high school and an elementary school. This accommodated the area’s rapid growth after World War I.

Did you know that Torrance High School’s first graduating class had only two students? That ceremony took place on June 18, 1918. As the student body grew, so did the campus. In 1921, the senior patio and fountain were added. By 1923, the home economics wing and auditorium were constructed.

Now, picture this: It’s March 10, 1933. A magnitude 6.4 earthquake strikes Long Beach. The quake severely damages Torrance High’s auditorium. The area around it sank several feet. It was then nicknamed the Sunken Garden. A new auditorium was built in 1937 as a Works Progress Administration project.

Torrance High School has a rich history beyond its architecture. In 1947, the Torrance Unified School District was formed. For one year, Torrance High School was part of the Redondo Union High School District. The following year, it officially joined Torrance Unified. Also, Torrance High has underground bomb shelters dating back to the Cold War era.

Torrance High School isn’t just about history; it’s about Hollywood too. Its unique architecture and proximity to studios have made it a popular filming location. You might recognize it from Beverly Hills, 90210 and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

In 2018, Architectural Digest named Torrance High School the most beautiful high school in California. The school has also been the alma mater of many famous people. Louis Zamperini was a track star and World War II hero. Ted Tanouye received the Medal of Honor. Angela Park and Jenny Shin became professional golfers.

Before we move on, consider this: Torrance High School has seen many changes. It has evolved from a small schoolhouse to a renowned institution. It stands as a testament to the city’s growth. It also shows the enduring power of education and community. Torrance High continues to inspire students and capture the imagination of filmmakers alike.
