Gazing up at this curious dome, one might wonder about its purpose. This, my friends, is the CP2 Weather Research Radar at Redbank Plains. It’s a familiar sight in the Ipswich landscape, even visible from Brisbane. The CP2 Weather Research Radar has played a crucial role in meteorological research. Originally a 1970s radar gifted by the US National Centre for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), it was significantly upgraded and installed here in December 2006. “CP” stands for cloud physics, and this facility has indeed been at the heart of hydrological and meteorological research in Australia. The CP2 Weather Research Radar contributed to improving our understanding of thunderstorms and advancing rainfall measurement and hail detection. It even explored the potential for cloud seeding. The radar collected data for ten years, contributing to research projects like analyzing intense rainfall events during east coast lows. The Bureau of Meteorology gained valuable experience operating the CP2’s advanced dual polarization technology. This technology allows the radar to distinguish between different types of precipitation, like rain and hail, based on the size and shape of the particles. While the CP2 Weather Research Radar is now decommissioned, its legacy lives on. Its mission is accomplished, with reusable parts returned to NCAR. The knowledge gained from the CP2 has informed the development of the Bureau’s public weather radar network, particularly the incorporation of dual polarization technology.
