A gasp escaped my lips. The view from the Upper Rock Nature Reserve is simply breathtaking.

Imagine. You stand on this ancient limestone peninsula. The Upper Rock Nature Reserve sprawls before you a protected area covering over 40% of Gibraltar’s land. Established in 1993 initially as the Upper Rock Nature Reserve it was expanded in 2013 to encompass the Great Gibraltar Sand Dune Windmill Hill and the Europa Foreshore. It’s more than just a reserve. It’s a time capsule. A place where history whispers through the wind.

This isn’t just any landscape. The Rock itself is part of the Betic Cordillera formed approximately 200 million years ago. From its 426-meter peak the vista is unparalleled. Spain stretches across the Bay of Gibraltar. Across the Strait of Gibraltar Jebel Musa in Morocco beckons. It’s a place of astonishing natural beauty a magnet for tourists and a haven for wildlife.

The Upper Rock Nature Reserve is famous for its Barbary macaques Europe’s only wild primate population. These cheeky monkeys are a major draw. They’re often spotted near the Ape’s Den the middle cable car station and near the Great Siege Tunnels. Did you know there’s a legend that claims when the last macaque leaves Gibraltar will no longer be British?

But the macaques aren’t the only residents. The reserve teems with life. Five species of lizard six snakes and an amphisbaenian a legless eyeless reptile call it home. The Iberian wall lizard is common. But you might also spot the rarer Algerian sand racer or the Moorish gecko.

And the birds. Oh the birds. The Upper Rock’s location at the head of the Strait of Gibraltar makes it a vital stopping point for migrating birds. Hundreds of thousands of raptors cross annually. The reserve supports Barbary partridges and lesser kestrels. Herons egrets ibis spoonbills flamingos eagles vultures and many more have been sighted here. The sheer diversity is incredible. It truly is an ornithologist’s paradise.

The Upper Rock isn’t just about wildlife. St Michael’s Cave is a must-see. First mentioned in 45 AD by Pomponius Mela this cave with its stalagmites and stalactites is both awe-inspiring and a popular concert venue. Forbes’ Quarry another site within the reserve is where Neanderthal remains were discovered in 1848. Think of it. The echoes of these ancient people resonate through the very stones you walk on. Gibraltar’s rich history merges seamlessly with its stunning natural beauty in this truly unforgettable reserve.

So explore. Discover. Marvel at the views. Observe the wildlife. Let the story of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve captivate you. It’s a journey through time a testament to the enduring power of nature and a treasure to be cherished.
