Resting peacefully here in Berlin’s Lichterfelde lies Traugott Böhme. This unassuming grave holds the story of a remarkable man. A pedagogue and archivist Traugott Böhme lived a life spanning momentous historical shifts.

Born in 1884 in Rottleberode Traugott Böhme’s journey led him far from his birthplace. He studied modern languages in Berlin earning his doctorate in 1909. His academic pursuits took an international turn. He served as a Prussian exchange teacher in North America. He even worked at Columbia University in New York. Later he became a teacher at a German high school in Mexico.

His career path continued to evolve. Böhme returned to Germany becoming a Legation Councilor in the Foreign Office. He focused on German schools abroad. He married the painter Ottilie Reylaender in 1929. This added another layer to his rich life.

The rise of Nazism impacted his career. He was prematurely retired from the Foreign Office in 1937. Despite this setback Böhme’s dedication to education persisted. He temporarily taught at the Goethe Lyceum in Berlin.

After World War II Böhme found himself working within the German Administration for National Education. He also worked in the Ministry of National Education of the GDR. Simultaneously he lectured at Humboldt University in Berlin. His commitment to education continued until 1953.

Traugott Böhme passed away in 1954. He was laid to rest here at Parkfriedhof Lichterfelde. His grave is an honorary grave of the state of Berlin. Ottilie his wife also rests here. She died in 1965.
