Seven hundred years ago, a tale unfolded at the Sri Kothandaramar temple. This sacred place, nestled in Nandambakkam, Chennai, whispers stories of ancient times. The Sri Kothandaramar temple’s history is deeply intertwined with the epic Ramayana. Legend says, Lord Rama, during his search for Sita, graced this land. He accepted an invitation from Sage Bringi to rest in a specially created garden, a Nandhavanam. This garden gave Nandambakkam its name, forever linking the Sri Kothandaramar temple to Rama’s journey. The temple itself, about 750 years old, stands as a testament to history. It was built by Sanjeevi Rayar, Prime Minister of the Vijayanagara King Sri Krishnadevaraya. Originally, shrines for Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita formed the heart of the temple. Later, shrines for Srinivasa, Alwars, Hanuman, and other deities were added, enriching its spiritual tapestry. Within the Sri Kothandaramar temple, Rama is depicted in the Pattaabishega posture, the coronation pose. Sita sits on his lap, surrounded by Lakshmana, Bharatha, and Chatrugna. Their gaze is directed south. Hanuman, facing north, and Srinivasa Perumal, facing east, complete the divine tableau. A beautiful Nandhavanam still exists outside the sanctum. Within it, a statue of child Krishna, known as Nandhavana Kannan, plays. A separate shrine for Hanuman, in a standing posture, graces the temple corridor. Opposite the Sri Kothandaramar temple lies the Bringi Rishi Theertham, a large pond named after the sage. It serves as a reminder of the sacred history of this place. The temple is a place of vibrant celebrations. Rama Navami, Brahmotsavam, and Garuda Sevai are celebrated with great enthusiasm. They attract devotees seeking blessings and a connection to the divine. The Sri Kothandaramar temple, with its rich history and spiritual significance, offers a tranquil escape. It is a place where the echoes of the Ramayana resonate. The serenity invites reflection. The stories of the temple leave a lasting impression on all who visit.
