Isn’t it remarkable how a building can hold centuries of stories within its walls? We are standing before The Mount, a place of immense historical importance in Gibraltar. The Mount served as the official residence for the Royal Navy’s senior officer stationed here for over two centuries.

The story of The Mount begins in 1797. It is believed that The Mount was constructed in this year. One of its early residents was Captain Harry Harmwood. He served as the Naval Commissioner in Gibraltar from 1793 to 1794. The British Admiralty purchased The Mount in 1799. This marked the beginning of its long association with the Royal Navy.

Before the extensive expansion of naval facilities in the late 19th century, The Mount was already a key part of the military presence in Gibraltar. This expansion included significant investments of £1.5 million. These investments led to the construction of three dry docks and the Detached Mole. Captain Augustus Phillimore, who would have resided here, originally suggested this work in 1871.

Interestingly, The Mount played a role in the early use of colour photography. Sarah Angelina Acland visited her brother, Admiral Sir William Acland, here in 1903. She captured some of the earliest colour photographs. Acland photographed Europa Point, flora within The Mount, and Colonel William Willoughby Cole Verner. Verner was a local ornithologist. He had to remain still for two minutes to capture the red, blue, and green components of the image. In 1904, she exhibited these prints in Britain under the title “The Home of the Osprey, Gibraltar.”

The Mount is now owned by the Government of Gibraltar. Today, The Mount serves as a wedding venue. Imagine exchanging vows in a place steeped in such rich history.

The Mount has witnessed countless events and hosted numerous dignitaries over the years. It stands as a testament to Gibraltar’s strategic importance and its enduring connection to the sea.
