Have you ever wondered how to reach the top of the Rock of Gibraltar in just six minutes? The answer lies right here at the Cable Car Lower Station. This is where your journey to the summit begins.
The Gibraltar Cable Car is more than just a ride. It is an experience that offers breathtaking views. It connects the town center to the top of the Rock. The Cable Car Lower Station sits near Main Street and Alameda Gardens.
In 1966, Swiss experts Von Roll Holding built this engineering marvel. Architect Brian Helliwell designed the base and summit stations. The location has historical significance. Signal Hill Battery once stood here. It had anti-aircraft guns during World War II.
Even older remains tell tales of a past cable station. Ropes once hauled supplies to Signal Hill. A short tunnel runs east to west under the station. It’s a relic of the area’s military history.
The Cable Car underwent a major renovation in 1986. The original cabins were replaced. The current cabins can carry an attendant and 30 passengers. In 2007, the Top Station received upgrades. These included the Calpe Suite, a wedding venue.
The Gibraltar Cable Car operates continuously. It runs approximately every 10 minutes. The ride takes you to the Ape’s Den and then to the top. Although named “top of the Rock” it’s actually the second highest peak. It stands 412 meters above sea level. The journey covers 673 meters between the stations. The cars travel at a speed of 5 m/s.
During the ascent, audio guides share Gibraltar’s history. From the top, you can see Morocco and Spain. Terraces offer views of the Strait of Gibraltar. You will view two continents and three countries. It’s the meeting point of two great bodies of water.
The Top Station provides many facilities. There is a restaurant and a café. You will also find toilet facilities and a souvenir shop. The shop has unique gifts not found in town.
If you wish to explore the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, access is available from the top. The Nature Reserve ticket gives you access to the Skywalk. You can also visit St. Michael’s Cave and the Windsor Suspension Bridge.
The Cable Car base station is easy to reach. Buses stop nearby. Parking is available in Grand Parade next to the station. A shuttle service is available from the frontier.
MH Bland owns and operates the Cable Car. Future plans include a major refurbishment. The lower and upper stations will be upgraded. The capacity of each cabin will increase.
