This stunning concert hall isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the legacy of Pablo Casals a cellist whose passion for music and peace inspired its very name. The Casals Forum opened in 2022. It’s the new home of the Kronberg Academy a renowned international institution for string players.
The building itself is a masterpiece. Designed by Volker Staab the architect embraced the wishes of acoustic engineers. The result is a free-form design with curved walls. These unique curves ensure the sound spreads perfectly throughout the hall. Musicians describe the acoustics as playing inside a violin. The hall boasts exceptional acoustics compared to renowned venues like Wigmore Hall and the Curtis Institute of Music.
The Casals Forum isn’t just about concerts. It also houses teaching and practice rooms for the academy’s students. The complex is a complete center for learning and performance. It’s a place where young musicians hone their craft. They walk the same hallowed halls that once hosted masters of their art.
The construction was a significant undertaking. It cost approximately €60 million. Private sponsors largely funded the project. Local Kronberg authorities the state of Hesse and the federal government also contributed. The opening in September 2022 was a grand celebration. Angela Dorn Hesse’s Minister of Arts was present. The event included 24 concerts featuring renowned soloists and ensembles. The Chamber Orchestra of Europe now calls the Casals Forum its home.
The building’s design is not solely functional. It houses a collection of sculptures and installations. Works by renowned artists Tony Cragg Antoni Tàpies Karin Sander and Studio Drift adorn its spaces. A bust of Casals himself adds a personal touch.
