How about a story about transformation and community? St. Bernard’s Church stands here a testament to both. It is one of eight Roman Catholic churches in Gibraltar. This church has a unique story.
Originally, St. Bernard’s Church served the British Armed Forces in Gibraltar. The military traditionally provided Anglican churches. They wanted to provide a place of worship for Roman Catholic members too. A disused armoury on Europa Road became the first simple church. Royal Navy padres served here. Gibraltarian civilians also attended.
Over time, the military presence shifted. The British Forces realised Gibraltar’s population was predominantly Roman Catholic. Church services in English already catered to servicemen’s religious needs. However, St. Bernard’s had grown a community of churchgoers. Most were Gibraltarian civilians. Some were temporary members of the forces. The community was important and should not be lost.
In the early 1990s, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gibraltar took responsibility for St. Bernard’s. Naval padre Vincent Docherty arranged the transfer of the priest’s house and church hall.
Under Bishop Charles Caruana’s leadership, the diocese secured a loan. The Government of Gibraltar provided it. The funds transformed the church. The small boxlike structure suffered from water damage. It became a modern, aesthetically pleasing church. All the amenities were added.
Fr. Francis Little was the first civilian priest in charge. He oversaw the transition from military to civilian worship. Fr. Francis also became the first civilian honorary chaplain to the forces. The priest in charge of St. Bernard’s has since fulfilled this role.
Today, St. Bernard’s Church serves as an auxiliary chapel. It is part of the St. Joseph parish area. As you stand here, consider the views. The church overlooks the Bay of Gibraltar. You can see North Africa. The Jebel Musa mountain is visible on the southern coast of the Strait of Gibraltar.
St. Bernard’s Church is named after one of Gibraltar’s two patron saints. That saint is Bernard of Clairvaux. This place embodies faith, community and transformation. It began as a military chapel. It evolved into a vibrant parish. St. Bernard’s Church continues to serve the spiritual needs of Gibraltar.
