Imagine over 400 stone lions standing guard. They line both sides of Leyuanzhuang Bridge. Welcome to a place where history whispers and art silently roars. This is Leyuanzhuang Bridge. It is a monument to time itself.

Leyuanzhuang Bridge is also known as Marco Polo Bridge. It stretches 266.5 meters long and 9.3 meters wide. The bridge crosses the Yongding River. It is a major Hai River tributary.

Have you noticed the many lions? They are the bridge’s most intriguing feature. Each large lion has smaller lions hiding on its body. Some are on the head. Others are on the back or under the belly. They are even on the paws.

Determining the exact number of lions has been a challenge. Counts vary from 482 to 501. Records suggest there were originally 627 lions. The lions’ postures and ages differ greatly. Most lions date from the Ming and Qing dynasties. A few rare ones are from the Jin dynasty.

Originally built in 1189, Leyuanzhuang Bridge has seen centuries pass. Marco Polo praised the bridge during his 13th-century visit. He said it had few equals in the world. This praise led to its European name.

The bridge has 11 arches supported by 10 piers. Four ornamental columns stand at each end. They reach 4.65 meters high. Look for the white marble stele. It records the reconstruction by the Kangxi Emperor in 1698. Another stele displays calligraphy by the Qianlong Emperor. It reads “Morning moon over Lugou”. For 800 years, it has been a scenic spot.

Leyuanzhuang Bridge is not only beautiful. It is an architectural masterpiece. It is built of granite. A large central arch is flanked by ten smaller ones. Triangular iron pillars protect each pier. They prevent damage from floods and ice.

However, Leyuanzhuang Bridge’s history is also marked by conflict. The Marco Polo Bridge Incident took place here. It marked the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War. This pivotal event shaped the course of history.

In 1937, a battle erupted here. It was between the National Revolutionary Army and the Imperial Japanese Army. Today, monuments around the bridge commemorate this incident.

After 1949, Leyuanzhuang Bridge was decked in asphalt. It carried vehicular traffic. To ease congestion, the New Marco Polo Bridge was built in 1971. Later, another bridge was built for the Jingshi Expressway in 1985. The old bridge closed to motor vehicles. In 1986, the asphalt was removed during restoration.

Crossing Leyuanzhuang Bridge today feels like walking through history. Imagine Marco Polo marveling at its beauty. Picture the soldiers defending it. Feel the weight of centuries.

The bridge stands as a testament to artistic brilliance. It also serves as a reminder of historical turning points. Leyuanzhuang Bridge links us to the past. It invites us to reflect on the present. It inspires us to consider the future. Take a moment. Let the spirit of Leyuanzhuang Bridge resonate within you.
