Gazing upon the Kyu Ōsawa-ke Jūtaku, one can almost feel the weight of centuries. This old farmhouse, nestled within the serene Fujisaki Forest Park in Narashino, Chiba, whispers tales of a bygone era. The Kyu Ōsawa-ke Jūtaku, designated a tangible cultural property by Chiba Prefecture, stands as a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of the Ōsawa family, who farmed and fished these lands for generations. Built in 1664, the Kyu Ōsawa-ke Jūtaku is considered one of the oldest existing farmhouses in eastern Japan. Originally located in Kazusa no Kuni Naganori mura Myōnari, present-day Chōsei-mura, Chiba, the house served as the residence of the Ōsawa family, prominent landowners in the region. The family used the house until 1973. It was relocated to its current location in Fujisaki Forest Park and opened to the public in 1974. The Kyu Ōsawa-ke Jūtaku offers a glimpse into the life of a farming family during the Edo period. The house features a large central living area, a raised section for storing valuable possessions during floods, and a combined shrine and Buddhist altar. The construction itself is remarkable. The few openings and unique “dei” entrance, constructed solely of a frame and wall, are characteristic of farmhouses of the mid-Edo period. The limited use of alcoves and the presence of thick black pillars further distinguish this architectural gem. Within the “doma” or earthen-floored area, daily tools and household items are displayed, and a fire is lit in the hearth on select mornings, recreating the atmosphere of the past. The park surrounding the Kyu Ōsawa-ke Jūtaku offers stunning seasonal views. In spring, cherry blossoms paint a vibrant backdrop against the historic farmhouse. The nearby pond offers glimpses of ducks and geese, and the occasional sighting of a heron. The park itself houses a preserved section of the Kishū Forest Railway King Line. The diesel locomotive, weighing five tons, and the accompanying log cars and passenger car are displayed, recreating a scene from the once-bustling Tadami Station. Originally spanning over 97 kilometers in the Kishū Valley, the railway primarily transported timber from the national forests. It also served the local community, carrying everyday goods. However, with the development of roads and the rise of truck transport, the railway declined and was eventually abandoned in the 1950s. The displayed locomotive, acquired by Narashino City in 1976, serves as a reminder of the railway’s significant role in the region’s history. Visiting the Kyu Ōsawa-ke Jūtaku is like stepping back in time. The preserved farmhouse, its surrounding park, and the remnants of the Kishū Forest Railway provide a captivating experience. They showcase a rich tapestry of history, nature, and human ingenuity.
