This imposing structure before us is Sankt Canisius. A testament to resilience it stands where its predecessor tragically burned. Sankt Canisius wasn’t always this striking modern building.

The story of Sankt Canisius in Berlin is one of beginnings and endings. It began modestly in 1921. A small chapel nestled within a gymnasium. This first iteration served a burgeoning community. Its location was ideal. It was conveniently located in a growing neighborhood. The Jesuits were the guiding force. They provided spiritual leadership. This first church was destroyed during World War II.

Then came a new church built between 1954 and 1957. It had soaring arches and a commanding presence. Sadly this second Sankt Canisius met a fiery end in 1995. A devastating fire reduced it to ashes. The cause? Sadly it was arson. Young people caused the fire. The flames consumed everything. Only a crucifix survived.

The community was heartbroken. But the spirit of Sankt Canisius remained unbroken. An architectural competition ensued. The winning design was chosen. The new church we stand before was consecrated in 2002. It is a striking example of modern church architecture.

Look closely. Notice the interplay of light and shadow within this sanctuary. The light concrete exterior is cool and austere. The interior however is warm and inviting. Larch wood accents soften the hard lines of the concrete. The altar is a stunning centerpiece. It’s a massive block of light-colored rough-hewn limestone. It’s a powerful symbol of faith. The church is more than just a place of worship. It’s a community hub. It houses a daycare center. It provides space for meetings and events.

It’s a place where people come together to celebrate their faith. It is a place to remember the past and look toward the future. It embodies the unwavering spirit of Sankt Canisius. A church three times reborn. A symbol of faith perseverance and renewal. A story written in stone wood and the enduring faith of its community.
