Picture the imposing façade of the Gibraltar Museum. Its walls whisper tales of centuries past. This isn’t just a museum. It’s a living testament to Gibraltar’s rich and complex history. The Gibraltar Museum opened its doors in 1930. General Sir Alexander Godley the then Governor had a vision. He wanted to showcase Gibraltar’s unique story. He cleverly chose two adjacent military quarters. Under one lay a hidden treasure. It was a 14th-century Moorish bathhouse. This discovery became an integral part of the Gibraltar Museum.

The museum’s story goes far beyond 1930. Long before the museum’s official opening there were attempts to establish a collection. Reverend John White a chaplain in the 18th century collected zoological specimens. He sent them to England for study. Unfortunately his work Fauna Calpensis was never published. His valuable collection is lost to time. Another early attempt was a collection at St Bernard’s Hospital. It included natural history specimens and morbid anatomy. Sadly no trace of this early collection remains.

A significant turning point was the Gibraltar Scientific Society. This group of British Army officers met at the Garrison Library. In 1835 they proposed opening a museum. Their efforts led to the first Gibraltar Museum in 1842. The museum’s significance grew so much they renamed the society the Museum Society. A truly remarkable find was made by the society. In 1848 they were presented with a fossil skull found at Forbes’ Quarry. It was later identified as a Neanderthal skull Gibraltar 1. This find predates the famous Neander Valley discovery in Germany. It shows the importance of early Gibraltar research.

The Gibraltar Museum’s collections are fascinating. There are forensic reconstructions of Neanderthal skulls. These are labelled Nana and Flint. The Age of Exploration rooms display artifacts from prehistory to the 20th century. You’ll see Phoenician and Carthaginian artifacts from Gorham’s Cave. There are also casts of the Neanderthal skulls. A captivating display is that of Calpeia a Neolithic woman dating back to 5400 BCE.

The museum’s garden is itself an exhibit. It reveals seven centuries of Gibraltar’s history. You can explore a 14th-century well a 16th-century cistern and 19th-century water channels. The Karozzin Room displays a horse-drawn carriage showing Maltese tradition. The Film Room showcases the making of the Neanderthal skull reconstructions. You can also see a film about Gorham’s Cave a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Moorish Baths are a highlight. They are remarkably well-preserved for their age. They are one of the best-preserved Moorish bathhouses in Europe. In 1906 Budgett Meakin an expert on Moorish antiquities wrote about them. He noted that only the Alhambra in Spain could compare in quality.

The Gibraltar Museum is far more than a collection of artifacts. It’s a journey through time. It connects you to Gibraltar’s past present and future. From Neanderthals to the Great Siege the museum brings this rich history to life. It’s an experience you won’t forget. Take your time to explore each gallery. Absorb the stories each exhibit tells. The Gibraltar Museum is a remarkable institution. It’s a source of pride for Gibraltar and a must-see for any visitor.
