Did you know that Hamburg-Moorfleet was once called Urenfleet? That’s right. This area nestled in the Vierlande has a history stretching back to 1162. A bishop’s document mentions it then as Urenfleet. The name meant ‘wet place’ reflecting the marshland character of this part of Hamburg.

Hamburg-Moorfleet sits on the Dove Elbe a branch of the Elbe River. It’s part of the Marschlande a fertile region that’s seen a unique mix of farming and industry. For centuries farming shaped Moorfleet. Farmers grew barley and hops supplying Hamburg’s breweries. Beer was a prized drink back then. Water wasn’t always safe. The hop and barley fields were vital to the city’s economy.

But Moorfleet’s history isn’t just about hops and barley. The area has seen hardship too. The Thirty Years’ War devastated Moorfleet. Then came the French occupation in 1813. The French plundered Moorfleet. They burned much of it down to create a clear field of fire. This act almost completely destroyed Moorfleet.

Despite these setbacks Moorfleet persevered. In the late 19th century industry began to encroach. The Tiefstack industrial area developed nearby. The area grew steadily. Today a mix of agriculture and modern industry exists side by side.

Even the name Moorfleet changed over time. For centuries it was called Moorfleth. Only in recent times did the current spelling become standard. The present Hamburg-Moorfleet exists at a crossroads. It retains a peaceful rural character in places. Yet the sounds of industry and modern traffic are also present.

A notable feature of Hamburg-Moorfleet is the St Nikolai church. This church stands near the center of the village. The church’s altar and pulpit are richly carved. The ceiling is painted with stars. This unique design is a reminder of Hamburg’s history as a major port. The church is a place of peace. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of Moorfleet.

Hamburg-Moorfleet also once housed the Bille Siedlung. This settlement was built on top of contaminated Elbschlick. The soil contained dangerous substances such as arsenic cadmium and dioxins. The town was evacuated and cleaned up. Today a golf course stands on that site.

This blend of history industry and natural beauty makes Moorfleet a unique place in Hamburg. It is a testament to the resilience of its people and their land. So let us remember this story of Hamburg-Moorfleet. A tale of agriculture industry and overcoming adversity. A place where the past and the present intertwine.
