Seventeen tonnes of Cor-Ten steel. That’s the weight of the Bahn-Damm sculpture before you. It’s an imposing presence isn’t it?

The Bahn-Damm sculpture stands on a raised paved square. It’s a powerful piece. Created by Georg Seibert in 1989 it’s more than just a pretty face. It’s a commentary. A reflection on the area’s history.

This wasn’t just randomly placed. The sculpture was commissioned during renovations of the Langenscheidt bridge. The bridge was built between 1898 and 1899. It underwent a major overhaul from 1987 to 1998. Seibert won a competition for the artistic design. The competition was for the area between Crellestrasse the bridge and the railway tracks. The motto was “Art for the bridgehead of the Langenscheidt Bridge Berlin-Schöneberg”.

Seibert’s design is abstract. It depicts a house. The house is next to a buffer stop. The house is framed by two posts and beams. The beams of the buffer stop form an X shape on one side. The sculpture’s design subtly connects the house motif with the nearby railway tracks. This connection was a deliberate choice by Seibert. He wanted to acknowledge the industrial environment surrounding the sculpture. This environment influences the artwork’s meaning.

Many mistakenly call it “Symbiosis”. That’s wrong. The correct name is Bahn-Damm. Remember that. It’s a detail that separates the casual observer from the informed art enthusiast.

The Bahn-Damm sculpture isn’t just steel and welds. It’s a story. A story of urban development. A story of industrial influence on daily life. It’s a story told in the language of modern sculpture. A story etched in the very material of its being. A story waiting for you to discover.
