Think of the ice-age dunes when you think of Sandhausen. This municipality in Baden-Württemberg owes its name to these very sand formations. Sandhausen is a place steeped in history. It is located just a few kilometers south of Heidelberg.

Sandhausen’s story begins long before its first official mention in 1262. Evidence suggests a settlement existed here even in Roman times. It was called Lochheim. The name Sandhausen emerged later. It was inspired by the region’s distinctive sand dunes. These dunes are a reminder of the last ice age.

In the Middle Ages, Sandhausen transitioned through different rulers. It was initially part of the Bishopric of Speyer. Later, Otto von Bruchsal granted it to Ludwig II, Electoral Palatin. In 1351, Sandhausen became part of Oberamt Heidelberg.

The village has seen its share of conflict. In 1462, troops from Baden and Württemberg sacked it during the Mainz Diocesan Feud. The Thirty Years’ War brought further devastation in 1622. Spanish troops caused destruction. French troops also ravaged Sandhausen in 1688 during the Nine Years’ War. They remained until 1697.

In 1777, Charles Theodore inherited Bavaria. He united the territories of the House of Wittelsbach. Sandhausen then became part of Bavaria. However, this was not to last. French troops occupied it in 1795. In 1803, it was awarded to the Grand Duchy of Baden.

Today, Sandhausen is a modern municipality. But its history is still visible. The village retains its unique character. This is due to its location and the resilient spirit of its people. Its story is one of survival and adaptation. From ancient settlements to medieval conflicts and modern development, Sandhausen has evolved.

Sandhausen is also known for its football club SV Sandhausen. The club has a history of playing in the second division of the German league. Its home ground is the Hardtwaldstadion. It is located on the outskirts of the town.

The landscape around Sandhausen is also special. The Rhein-Neckar Metropolitan region has a unique charm. Sandhausen is known for its sand dune. Sandhausen belongs to the Rhein-Neckar Metropolitan region.
