Leaving familiar communities was not easy. There was no dedicated place for worship at first. The priests faced a daunting task. They needed a special kind of spirit to make it work.
One priest recalled his appointment in July 1965 with trepidation. He was given a map and told to find a place for the Eucharist. He was to connect with future parishioners. A small donation of 8000 pesetas was given to him. Looking to the heavens he asked for guidance.
The initial months were challenging. A search began for a place to gather. But finding a suitable spot proved difficult. An old saying seemed fitting. There was no room at the inn. Yet hope remained.
The first glimmer of hope came from Pepita Sánchez Beato. She was the director of the Víctor Pradera school. She offered a small space. It was a former woodshed. It was also a storage room. It was filled with firewood and broken chairs. But it was a start.
Soon Dª. Pepita offered an even greater opportunity. She knew of a blocked-off space on General Yagüe street. It might be worth investigating.
With only the light of a lighter they looked at the space. They imagined what it could become. This could be a church. The priest acted swiftly. He left others to clean the initial space. He went to tell the Auxiliary Bishop.
That very afternoon the construction company was meeting. They intended to grant the space to department stores. The decision was made to allocate it to the church. But the news would not be revealed for two days.
October 13th was a day of joy. The secretary of the construction company delivered the news. The space was awarded to Parroquia de San Germán. He even provided the plans.
Emotions ran high. There was much to do. The priest bid farewell to his beloved Los Molinos parish. He began planning the renovations. Artisans were needed. The community from Los Molinos stepped up.
Meanwhile the school space became a meeting place. Parishioners gathered. They wanted to help build their new community. Many offered their support.
News of the new parish spread. Some were sad to leave Santa María Micaela. But soon, the inauguration of the church was announced.
