Is it possible that the largest mosque in Geneva stands right here? The Geneva Mosque also known as the Petit-Saconnex Mosque welcomes people of all faiths. Let’s delve into the story of this important religious and cultural landmark.

The Geneva Mosque’s story began in the 1970s. Financed by the Muslim World League based in Saudi Arabia it was constructed in 1978. The neighborhood of Le Petit-Saconnex was chosen as its location. The Geneva Mosque became a reality.

King Khalid ibn Abd al-Aziz of Saudi Arabia and Willi Ritschard President of the Swiss Confederation inaugurated the Geneva Mosque. This symbolized the collaboration between the Muslim world and Switzerland. The Geneva Mosque became the largest in the city and the entire country.

The Geneva Mosque can accommodate up to 1500 worshippers. This provides a spacious and welcoming environment for prayer and reflection. The Islamic Cultural Foundation of Geneva manages the Geneva Mosque. Yahya Basalamah serves as the imam. He guides the community in faith and spiritual matters.

In 2017, Muhammad bin Abdul Karim Issa the secretary-general of the Muslim World League announced plans to reform the Islamic Cultural Foundation of Geneva. This demonstrates a commitment to positive engagement. The aim was for the Geneva Mosque to become a model of dialogue and integration. The MWL threatened to withdraw support if this wasn’t achieved.

The Geneva Mosque is more than just a place of worship. It is a cultural center that promotes understanding and exchange. The Islamic Cultural Center of Geneva was created to provide a prayer hall. It also serves as a gathering place for Muslims from diverse backgrounds living in Geneva.

The architecture of the Geneva Mosque blends traditional Islamic elements with local architectural styles. The intention was to respect local architectural forms. The site was once a large estate covering 4200 square meters. It is located near international organizations. This makes it a prestigious location.

The complex incorporates existing structures. A manor house and farm building were renovated and integrated into the Islamic Cultural Center’s program. The complex is divided into four sections. These sections include the mosque, the Koranic school, conference facilities and offices.

The prayer hall is the most prominent space in the complex. It features a domed octagonal design. The minaret of the Geneva Mosque reaches a height of 22 meters. The prayer hall is attached to a square courtyard building that houses the cultural center.

The Koranic school is located in the renovated farmhouse. It provides seven classrooms for religious education. The manor house now houses a conference room, a library and a language lab. Offices, a cafeteria and a morgue are located around a central courtyard. This connects the Geneva Mosque to the older buildings.

The Geneva Mosque stands as a testament to Geneva’s multiculturalism. It is a place where different cultures meet. It is a symbol of dialogue and integration. The Geneva Mosque continues to serve as a vital center for the Muslim community. It also promotes understanding between different cultures and faiths in Geneva and beyond.
