Wasn’t it innovative for its time? Before us stands the Immeuble Clarté a testament to modern architecture. This remarkable building at 2 and 4 Rue Saint-Laurent in Geneva’s Eaux-Vives neighborhood is more than just apartments. It’s a piece of history a legacy of Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. Commissioned by the Genoese industrialist Edmond Wanner between 1930 and 1932 the Immeuble Clarté represents a pivotal moment in architectural design.

Wanner a businessman who ran a railway company showcased his products at the 1925 Paris Decorative Arts Exhibition. There he likely met Le Corbusier at the Esprit Nouveau Pavilion. The Immeuble Clarté embodies four of Le Corbusier’s five points: free plan ad hoc structure free facade and walls of glass. The building’s steel structure allowed for open plans glass facades and terraces. It revolutionized middle-class living. Le Corbusier’s concept of a ‘rue intérieure’ an interior street is successfully realized in this building.

The building itself is striking. It features two fully glazed facades. These facades incorporate double glazing sliding windows glass doors and translucent reinforced glass. Wooden plank galleries act as sunshades. The layout is ingenious. It boasts 48 apartments of various sizes and shapes. Sixteen are duplexes. The ground floor houses five shops and main entrances. These lead to lobbies and two stairwells. Common services such as storage areas heating equipment bicycle parking and trash disposal are all located on the ground floor.

From the first floor upward single and duplex apartments utilize the basement of the commercial premises as a terrace. Apartment layouts vary. Each floor holds a mirror-image arrangement of apartments. Two single units flank two duplex units. Access is through central staircase cubes. Balconies and shutters offer sun control. Even the eighth floor is unique. One steel bay is recessed. This allows smaller apartments to share roof terrace space. The roof itself is a magnificent solarium offering stunning city views.

The Immeuble Clarté’s structure is another marvel. Designed by Robert Maillart it utilizes prefabricated steel pieces. Columns are spaced 2.8 meters apart. Horizontal steel pieces form the mezzanine floor. The prefabrication extends to the stairs. Rolled steel steel grid plates and glass pieces ensure lightness and transparency. The exterior features a steel sheet coating on the shop fronts and precast concrete terraces and solarium. The entire structure rests on pillars. This innovation frees facades and interior walls from load-bearing functions. This provides immense flexibility in apartment layouts.

The Immeuble Clarté is more than just an apartment building. It is a historical monument. A landmark that deserves recognition for its innovative design its elegant construction and its significant impact on modern architecture. A visit here provides insight into a remarkable period of architectural history. Its restoration between 2007 and 2009 has ensured its continued preservation as a testament to the vision of Le Corbusier and its enduring elegance. It stands as a true symbol of the modern movement in Geneva a city known for international organizations and its rich history.
