From a humble beginning on May 12, 1892, Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church, originally named Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, has witnessed the ebb and flow of Los Angeles history. Twenty-six souls, largely from the Second Baptist Church of Los Angeles, gathered at 118½ South San Pedro to lay the cornerstone of their faith. The church’s early journey was marked by a nomadic existence. They worshipped at various locations, including Second & Rose and Third & Stephens. Finally, a small mission on Third & Traction, purchased from First Baptist Church for $1,500, offered a permanent sanctuary. This marked a pivotal moment for the growing congregation. In 1923, Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church moved to its current location at Fiftieth & Hooper. Over the years, fifteen pastors have guided the flock at Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church, each leaving an indelible mark. Reverend David Evans, the first pastor, was known for his studious nature and fervent passion for evangelism. Reverend Sippio Thompson oversaw the purchase and six-year payoff of the Third & Traction mission. Reverend Joseph T. Hill, a brilliant biblical scholar and civil rights advocate, propelled Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church to prominence during his tenure. Reverend Frank Herman Prentice, affectionately called the “sweetheart” of the Foreign Mission Board and the “prince of preachers,” led the church for nearly 34 years. His leadership saw significant growth, necessitating the construction of a new building. Under Reverend Edward V. Hill’s 42-year pastorate, Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church gained international recognition. He championed numerous community outreach programs, including the Lord’s Kitchen, which served thousands of meals weekly to those in need. Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church stands not only as a testament to faith, but also to the power of community. The church has weathered storms, overcome challenges, and continues to serve as a beacon of hope in Los Angeles. It embodies a rich legacy of faith, service, and unwavering dedication to its mission.
