Gaze upon this magnificent marble bust. It depicts Thomas Edward Brown the Manx national poet. This isn’t just any statue. This is a tribute to a man who captured the very soul of the Isle of Man in his poetry.

Thomas Edward Brown born in Douglas in 1830 was a remarkable figure. He wasn’t just a poet. He was a scholar a schoolmaster and a theologian. He achieved a double first at Christ Church Oxford. He even became a fellow of Oriel College.

Brown’s life was full of contrasts. He was headmaster at The Crypt School in Gloucester. He later taught at Clifton College near Bristol. It was a demanding job but he found the time to write. His poems often used the Anglo-Manx dialect. This blended Manx Gaelic with English. It gave his poetry a unique flavour.

He wrote many famous works. Fo’c’sle Yarns The Doctor The Manx Witch and Old John are just a few. He is celebrated for his narrative poetry and his use of the local dialect. His poems often dealt with humour and deep emotion.

In 1892 Brown retired to focus on his writing. He returned to the Isle of Man the place he loved. Tragically he died in 1897 during a visit to Clifton College. He passed away while addressing the boys there.

This bust itself has a story. It was created by Joseph W Swynnerton. It was funded by public subscriptions. It was initially placed in Douglas Town Hall. Later it found its home here in the Manx Museum.

Stand here and absorb the essence of T E Brown. His words still resonate. His legacy lives on in this beautiful bust. He is a reminder of the power of poetry. He is a symbol of Manx pride. He is a testament to a life lived fully and creatively. This statue stands as a permanent reminder of his achievements. His spirit lives on through the generations.
