Doesn’t the name Bischofsholer Damm sound like a fairytale? Actually, it is a centuries-old street in Hanover. It runs from Braunschweiger Platz to Bischofshol toward Bemerode. We are standing on Bischofsholer Damm.

Once upon a time in 1830 the road to the Bischofshol forest house was officially named Bischofsholer Weg. This was during the Kingdom of Hanover. Then in 1845 it was renamed Bischofsholer Damm. Originally, the street began at Marienstraße in Südstadt. But that section was renamed Am Südbahnhof in 1924. This was due to its location.

Bischofsholer Damm is home to some interesting buildings. There is a dormitory at Bischofsholer Damm 85 and Eintrachtweg 10A. It is close to several universities. These include the University of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Economics. The University of Music, Drama and Media Hanover is also nearby. A tram stop is conveniently located right here. The Eilenriede forest and the former horse-race track Alte Bult are also close. All rooms in the dormitory have internet access included in the rent.

The Rudolf-Kalweit-Stadion was formerly called Stadion Bischofsholer Damm until 2005. It opened in 1918. It is a rectangular football stadium. In 1963, part of the stadium was removed to widen Bischofsholer Damm. The road behind one of the goals was expanded. Arminia Hannover was asked to move. But they declined. The roof of the grandstand came from Stadion Rote Erde. This was the former home of Borussia Dortmund. It was moved to Hanover in 1976. During World War II, the stadium was hit by three bombs. In 2005, the stadium was renamed to honor Rudolf Kalweit. He was a long-term member of Arminia. The stadium once held almost 20000 people. This was in April 1960. Arminia won 6-1 versus Bremer SV.

Today, Bischofsholer Damm is a vibrant part of Hanover. It connects different parts of the city. It has witnessed much change over the centuries. Take a moment to imagine the horse-drawn carriages that once traveled this route. Think about the people who have lived and worked along this historic street. Bischofsholer Damm is more than just a road. It is a living piece of Hanover’s past.
