Hidden within Morningside Heights stands the Church of Notre Dame a testament to faith and history. This isn’t just any church. It’s a living story etched in stone and stained glass.

The Church of Notre Dame began its journey in 1910. It started as a small chapel a mission of St Vincent de Paul Parish. A generous donation from Geraldyn Redmond made it possible. She envisioned a place dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes.

The Fathers of Mercy French priests took on this mission. They served the growing French immigrant community in Harlem. Their first administrator Rev Maurice Reynauld sadly died in World War I. But his legacy lives on. He forged a unique connection between the Church of Notre Dame and the Sanctuary of Our Lady in Lourdes. Miraculous Lourdes water has flowed continuously here ever since.

Architects Daus and Otto built the initial sanctuary. Cross & Cross expanded it significantly. The planned dome never materialized. The church continued to grow. It expanded intermittently over fifty years.

Archbishop John Farley dedicated the chapel in 1910. Cardinal Farley dedicated the larger church in 1915 on the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. Notre Dame became an independent parish in 1919. It transformed from a small chapel into the grand structure we see today. It remained a vibrant center for New York’s French community.

The Notre Dame Study Club a unique organization of parishioners played a pivotal role. In 1936 they were the first to urge every Catholic parish to support social justice for Black people.

The Church of Notre Dame is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place where history and faith intertwine. It’s a place of extraordinary diversity. It’s home to people of Irish German Italian Black Hispanic and Filipino descent. It reflects the rich tapestry of its Harlem neighborhood.

In 1967 the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission recognized its significance. It designated the church and rectory as official city landmarks. The buildings were later added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Even today the Church of Notre Dame continues to evolve. It’s a beacon of faith a vibrant community center. It’s a place where the miraculous waters of Lourdes continue to flow a reminder of its enduring spiritual connection. It’s a story of faith perseverance and a profound commitment to social justice. This is the Church of Notre Dame a place you won’t soon forget.
