“Wonder if Calvin ever strolled through here?” someone muses. We are standing in Chambésy. This charming village is part of Pregny-Chambésy. It sits north of Geneva on Lake Geneva’s shore.

Pregny-Chambésy is more than just a pretty place. Its history stretches back centuries. Pregny was first noted as Priniacum in 1113. Chambésy appeared as Sambesie in 1277.

From 1353, the area was ruled by the County of Savoy and later by the Duchy of Savoy. Then, in 1536, Bern conquered it. However, Savoy regained control in 1567. The Republic of Geneva seized it in 1590. France followed in 1601. Finally, in 1815, it became part of the canton of Geneva and joined the Swiss Confederacy.

The municipality of Pregny-Chambésy extends over 3.24 square kilometers. This includes agricultural land, forests, and settled areas. Originally, it was the village of Pregny plus the hamlets of Chambésy-Dessus and Chambésy-Dessous. There was also the settlement of Roilbot. Until 1960, it was simply known as Pregny.

Pregny-Chambésy is conveniently located. It is just three kilometers from Geneva. It lies on the right shore of Lake Geneva.

The village has grown over time. In the early 16th century, Pregny had only 12 households. By 1850, the population was 463. It increased to 651 in 1900 and 1,093 in 1950. In 2000, it reached 3,009.

Interestingly, John Calvin liked to relax in Pregny. He visited his brother at a property known as “Calvin’s Island”.

Pregny-Chambésy offers an enviable lifestyle. It combines countryside charm with proximity to Geneva. The Geneva International Airport and the United Nations are also close.

Today, Pregny-Chambésy is mainly residential. Yet it retains a peaceful village atmosphere. It even has a train station, connecting it to Geneva’s Cornavin station.

Take a moment to appreciate the surroundings. Imagine the historical figures who once walked these streets. From counts to reformers, Chambésy has seen it all.

Pregny-Chambésy is a blend of history and modern life. Its location is ideal. Its past is rich. It is a unique Swiss community.
