Across the Passaic River stands the Jackson Street Bridge. It connects Newark to suburban Harrison. This seemingly ordinary bridge holds a fascinating history. Constructed by the Fagan Iron Works between 1897 and 1898 the Jackson Street Bridge opened on April 11 1898. Chief Engineers James Owen and Thomas McBarn oversaw its creation. The bridge’s design was a unique quadrangle lattice through truss. Its total length was 467 feet. The main span measured 221 feet.
The Jackson Street Bridge’s structural integrity was always a concern. In 1973 Essex and Hudson counties received $2.4 million for repairs. These renovations started in 1974. The original swing span used a two-pinion system. A vertical two-cylinder steam engine powered the rotation. Later the steam engines were replaced by air engines. Gasoline-powered air compressors were initially used but later transitioned to propane due to the bridge’s deteriorated condition.
The bridge’s poor condition led to its closure in 1987. However further funding in 1987 allowed for its reopening in 1991. This rehabilitation involved strengthening the truss lower chord and diagonals. The drum girder wheel assembly and floor beams were replaced. The entire operating mechanism was also completely renewed. Sadly very little of the original bridge remained after the repairs. Only the truss lines and railings survived. Despite the extensive alterations the bridge remains historically significant due to its unusual truss design.
