Perhaps you’ve wondered why this church is named after a mountain pass. This is the story of the Paroisse St-Bernard de Menthon. It is a place of peace in Plan-les-Ouates Geneva.

The Paroisse St-Bernard de Menthon is more than just a church. It is a symbol of community and history. The church’s story starts with Saint Bernard of Menthon. He founded a hospice in the Swiss Alps around 1050. This was at the Great St Bernard Pass. He aimed to stop mountain brigands. The pass and the dogs share his name.

In late 1951, Plan-les-Ouates Catholics split from Compesières parish. The Chapitre cathédral approved. The new parish was named after Saint Bernard. The chapel built in 1936 by Marcel de Mirbach became the parish church.

The faithful expanded the chapel. Marcel de Mirbach’s chapel became the Paroisse St-Bernard de Menthon. Early stained glass was placed in the narthex. Marcel Feuillat created a Stations of the Cross in 1955. Paul Monnier added stained glass in 1964. He worked in the nave and choir. Charles Collet sculpted the entrance arches that same year.

A renovation occurred in 1979. New lighting was installed inside the Paroisse St-Bernard de Menthon. The organ was replaced in 1981.

This church offers regular Sunday services. It is a welcoming space. The Paroisse St-Bernard de Menthon provides a haven for prayer. It also allows a space for reflection. Its doors are open daily. They are open from 10 AM to 7 PM.

The St Bernard dogs were bred for mountain rescue. They were strong enough to cross deep snow. They could track lost travelers by scent. The dogs sometimes carried brandy to revive travelers. This image became a 19th-century myth. One dog named Barry saved forty lives.

The Paroisse St-Bernard de Menthon stands as a testament to faith. It shows art and community. It is linked to a legacy of helping others. This legacy stretches from the Alps to Geneva. The church is named after a saint. He dedicated his life to those in need. The Paroisse St-Bernard de Menthon embodies this spirit today.
