The stained glass whispers stories of faith. This is the Église Saint-Nicolas-de-Flue. Its very existence is a testament to shifting tides and community resilience. In 1954 a new independent parish was formed under the patronage of Nicholas of Flüe. A humble chapel served as the first gathering place.

Imagine the quiet devotion of those early masses held within its walls. The need for a larger church grew. By the mid-1960s the decision to build was made. Architects Virgilio Jacques Malnati and François Bouvier shaped its design. The cornerstone was blessed in 1966. The beautiful church we see today was consecrated in 1967.

Four striking stained-glass windows by Jacques Wasem bathe the interior in light. These windows aren’t just decorative elements. They are powerful symbols of the parish’s history and faith. Years passed. The number of parishioners dwindled. Renovation costs became overwhelming. A surprising solution emerged.

In 2013 the Église Saint-Nicolas-de-Flue exchanged its premises. It did so with the English-speaking Catholic parish. This parish had been located at the Centre Jean XXIII since 1982. It lacked space because of its rapidly growing congregation. The exchange proved mutually beneficial. The English-speaking community gained the much-needed space. Meanwhile the Église Saint-Nicolas-de-Flue found new life through the exchange.

The story of the Église Saint-Nicolas-de-Flue is not merely about buildings and renovations. It’s a story of adaptation and community. It’s a story of two congregations finding common ground. It is also about the enduring spirit of faith in a constantly changing world. It is a quiet yet powerful story. A story written in stone glass and shared community history.
