“A square with a story.” That’s what we have right here at Tsezar Kunikov Square in Moscow. This square may seem like just another open space. However Tsezar Kunikov Square holds a unique history. It’s named in honor of Tsezar Lvovich Kunikov. He was a Hero of the Soviet Union.

Tsezar Kunikov Square emerged in the 1970s. By 1977, the Novorossiysk cinema opened here. Today it is the Central House of Entrepreneurs. The square got its name a year later. It was named to honor officer Tsezar Lvovich Kunikov. He died during the Great Patriotic War.

The square is located near the Garden Ring. It sits at the intersection of Sadovaya-Chernogryazskaya Street and Pokrovka Street. Zemlyanoy Val Street is nearby. But it is not considered part of the square.

Tsezar Kunikov commanded a landing party. In February 1943, they secured a bridgehead at Malaya Zemlya. He died a few days later from a fascist mine. At Tsezar Kunikov Square the cinema and square symbolically created a single space. Before that one could see the present pier. It consisted of a ship from Tsemess Bay.

Public transportation is easily accessible near the square. Buses B, m3, m3k, 40, 78, 024, and H3 all stop nearby.

The Pokrovka street side boasts attractive buildings. The old structures have been preserved. There are even elements of church architecture. A free tour of Basmanny District can provide more details.

Tsezar Kunikov Square stands as a reminder. It reminds us of Soviet heroism. It links cinema and civic space. Take a moment to reflect on the past. Consider the events that shaped this place.
