Did you know that Alberto Ginastera a titan of 20th-century classical music rests here in Geneva? He was not Genevan by birth. His story however is one of global artistry. It culminated in this Swiss city.

Alberto Ginastera was born in Buenos Aires in 1916. He was Argentina’s greatest composer of classical music. Imagine a young boy surrounded by the sounds of a Catalan and Italian family. This is Ginastera. He called himself a Mediterranean man born in Buenos Aires.

His formal musical education began at the Williams Conservatory. Ginastera excelled. He studied with leading composers. They included Celestino Piaggio and José Gil. Ginastera developed a strong foundation. He studied harmony counterpoint and piano. Later he entered the National Conservatory. He studied under Athos Palma and José André. In 1938 he graduated with honors again.

Political instability marked Ginastera’s career. After initial success with his ballet Panambí he won composition competitions. In 1941 he became a professor at his alma mater. The same year he also won a professorship in a military institution. In 1942 Ginastera won a Guggenheim scholarship. This allowed him to move to the US. However World War II postponed the trip.

In 1945 Ginastera clashed with Argentinian politics. He was fired for signing a manifesto. It opposed the military regime’s suppression of liberty. Later he studied with Aaron Copland at Tanglewood. He visited prestigious American universities. This experience proved crucial for his pedagogical career.

In 1948 Ginastera founded the Liga de Compositores. It was a society for circulating Argentinian composers’ works. He helped craft study programs. He also founded conservatories and music schools. Ginastera’s name is linked to Argentina’s musical education centers.

Between 1952 and 1955 economic hardship struck. This prompted him to compose film music. One success was Facundo el tigre de los llanos. In 1955 Indiana University offered him a professorship. However he declined due to his nationalistic feelings.

Ginastera became internationally renowned. Major commissions and prizes came his way. The New York Philharmonic performed his works. His opera Don Rodrigo was performed at the New York City Opera.

In 1968 he briefly returned to the US. In 1970 Ginastera settled in Geneva. Here he composed his final works. They include his opera Beatrix Cenci. He also worked on his second Cello concerto. His final work Popol Vuh remained unfinished.

Ginastera passed away in 1983. He was 67 years old. He rests here in the Cimetière des Rois. Another Argentinian artist Jorge Luis Borges is nearby.

Ginastera merged European art music with Argentine folk elements. His style evolved with the times. He left a legacy as an educator. Some of his famous pupils include Astor Piazzolla.

Ginastera cultivated opera ballet symphonies and chamber music. His works are divided into three stylistic periods. They are Objective Nationalism Subjective Nationalism and Neo-Expressionism. Each period varies in its use of Argentine musical elements.
