Tucked away in the Lombardy region, Cascina San Giacomo whispers tales of resilience and transformation. Cascina San Giacomo started as a humble refuge for travelers in the 15th century. The first stones were laid for a small chapel and the beginnings of the cascina. It was owned by Filippo della Porta, a man with a vision of offering shelter to weary pilgrims on their journeys. The name, San Giacomo, a nod to the patron saint of pilgrims, resonated with the spirit of the place. The della Porta family held the property until 1550. Then, the Dominican nuns of San Lazzaro Monastery in Milan acquired the land. They transformed Cascina San Giacomo into a working agricultural estate. They even built a ghiacciaia, an ice house, demonstrating their forward-thinking approach to farming. Cascina San Giacomo flourished through the 18th century. The original structure expanded to accommodate its growing importance. Homes sprang up around the cascina, creating a small community. An osteria, a traditional inn, opened its doors. It provided much-needed refreshment for travelers and locals alike. The osteria still stands today, a testament to the enduring spirit of this place. The 19th century saw continued prosperity for Cascina San Giacomo. But the rise of industrialization in the 20th century brought new challenges. Agriculture declined. The cascina and its surrounding lands changed hands. First to the Corbellini family of Corbetta. Then to the Crivelli family of Castellazzo de’ Stampi. The Crivelli family breathed new life into the aging buildings. They divided the larger structures into apartments, attracting new residents. Cascina San Giacomo, once a haven for pilgrims, evolved into a vibrant community. The heart of Cascina San Giacomo, the Oratorio di San Giacomo, stands as a witness to its long history. This small chapel, initially built in the 14th century, reflects a blend of architectural styles. Its late Baroque features, both inside and out, tell a story of adaptation and change. The simple facade, adorned with pilasters, leads to a wooden door. Above, a lunette window casts light onto the interior. High above, another lunette window is topped with the initials “S.G.” for San Giacomo, a constant reminder of the cascina’s namesake. Inside, despite some age-related cracks, the Oratorio di San Giacomo holds some remarkable treasures. The single nave boasts a faux coffered ceiling decorated with floral patterns. A 19th-century wooden cross and an 18th-century depiction of the Dead Christ adorn the walls. The altar’s centerpiece is a striking fresco. It portrays the Madonna and Child enthroned, flanked by San Giacomo and Sant’Antonio da Padova. Although the artist remains unknown, the work’s quality points to the late 18th century. Above, a dove with outstretched wings symbolizes the Holy Spirit. Cascina San Giacomo has journeyed through time, adapting to each new era. From pilgrim’s refuge to bustling farm to modern community, it holds a special place in the Lombardy landscape.
