“Imagine a school built on history.” Coolmine Community School stands here today. It replaced Coolmine House. The house was later demolished in the 1980s. This school has a rich history. Coolmine Community School’s story began in 1972. It was initially named Blanchardstown Community School. The name changed when the building was ready.

When Coolmine Community School first opened, 139 pupils attended. Students initially studied in a temporary building. A full range of subjects was not yet available. The permanent school building was completed in 1974. Coolmine Community School then opened its doors to 600 students. There were 36 full-time teachers. The official opening ceremony occurred in May 1974. Coolmine Community School was the second community school in Ireland.

Richard Burke spoke at the ceremony. He was the Minister for Education. He said the school should meet the needs of the local people. He spoke about educational and developmental needs. This became the foundation of community schools. A post-primary school was needed in Blanchardstown. The idea arose in the 1960s. Boys had difficulty finding post-primary places. Coolmine Community School became the first of its kind in the area.

Blanchardstown became one of the new towns. Development and population growth were occurring. Many new housing estates were built. This increased the need for a post-primary school. Demand kept rising with the population. Coolmine Community School has been updated over the years.

In 1985, the sports complex was extended. It gained a large gymnasium. A 25-meter swimming pool was added. A workout room and changing facilities were included. The extension cost around £200,000. The board of management raised most of the money. Coolmine Community School also invested in the Green Project in 2015. It reduced carbon emissions by switching to energy-efficient lights. This improved the lighting system. Maintenance problems were reduced as a result.

Coolmine Community School crest shows St Brigid’s Cross. It includes the early Irish symbol of the Holy Trinity. The letter C represents community. “Creideamh Beo” is the school motto. It means living faith. Coolmine Community School now caters for over 1200 pupils. These are boys and girls aged 12 to 19. They live in the defined catchment area. The school includes a sports and leisure complex. It features an indoor heated swimming pool.

Many notable people attended Coolmine Community School. Joanne Cantwell is a sports broadcaster. Philip Cassidy is a former professional cyclist. Martin Earley also cycled professionally. Jade Jordan works as an actor and author. Mark Kennedy played football internationally for Ireland.

Coolmine Community School has changed significantly over the years. It started small but grew to meet the needs of the community. It provides education and facilities for many students. Coolmine Community School continues to evolve and serve its community.
