On September 23, 1928, a devastating fire broke out. It was a Sunday night and the zarzuela “La mejor del puerto” was being performed. The theater was packed. When the fire started panic erupted. Evacuation became chaotic. The flames spread quickly because much of the building was made of wood. When the fire was finally put out, 67 bodies were found in the ashes. Sadly, more people died in the following weeks from burns. It is estimated that around 80 spectators died in total.
