“Camp” may spring to mind upon first seeing it. The Camel Sculpture stands proudly at the entrance to Impington. It is hard to miss.

This impressive metalwork is the creation of Tony Hillier. He was a local resident known for his welding skills. Hillier’s quirky sculptures were once displayed in his front garden. This garden faced the B1049.

After Hillier’s death in 2014, his collection was dispersed. Many pieces were donated to the community. Now, the Camel Sculpture along with other artworks are dotted around the villages.

The Camel Sculpture is quite large. It stands at the junction of the B1049 and Cambridge Road. Its long eyelashes and distinctive appearance have divided opinions. Some find it hideous. Others have grown to love it.

Hillier created other sculptures as well. These include ‘Man and Dog’, ‘Sewing (Andy Capp)’, and ‘Truffle the Pig’. Dogs seemed to be a favorite subject of Hillier’s. They appear in several of his works.

The Camel Sculpture has a sign. It asks people not to climb on it.

These sculptures are weathering. There is concern about their long-term maintenance. Some worry they will become dangerous. Eventually they may be removed.

Despite mixed opinions, the Camel Sculpture has become a local landmark. It marks the entrance to Impington. The Camel Sculpture is a unique piece of public art. It sparks conversation and evokes different reactions. Whether loved or disliked, it certainly stands out. It adds character to the community.
