My father grew up on Caldwell near Derby Hill. It is now known as Dorais Park. But my dad always called it Derby Hill. He played pond hockey here. The park was a few hundred feet from his front door.

In the olden days, Detroit’s annual soapbox derby took place on this sledding hill. There was also an oval bicycle track. The U.S. National Track Championships happened here.

The Mower Gang cleaned up the derelict bike track. They brought it back to life. They transformed it into the Thunderdrome. Thunderdrome is a full day of racing. Anything on two wheels is fair game. Mountain bikes, mopeds, and go-karts race here.

The park looked like a prairie. The Mower Gang planted a community garden. Greening of Detroit brought in new trees. The hill, the trees, and the grass are beautiful.
