Hidden away at the southern tip of Cologny lies the Église Saint-Paul. This isn’t a church you stumble upon. You have to seek it out. It is well worth the effort. The Église Saint-Paul in Grange-Canal is a testament to the artistic vision of Father Francis Jacquet. He dreamed of a church that was not just a place of worship but also a masterpiece of modern sacred art. This dream took root in 1911. The Catholic population was growing rapidly in Geneva. Father Jacquet was tasked with establishing a new parish in Grange-Canal.

Father Jacquet a man of great culture and artistic sensibility appointed the young architect Adolphe Guyonnet. Guyonnet was tasked with designing a church capable of holding 600 people. The church needed to connect directly with the rectory. A large well-lit meeting room was to be built in the basement. The building’s Romanesque design was inspired by the simplicity of early Christian churches. Guyonnet focused on clean lines and harmonious volumes. He ensured that the interior and exterior designs blended seamlessly. The artists’ decorations echoed this architectural spirit.

The Église Saint-Paul wasn’t finished in a hurry. Construction began in 1913 and the inauguration took place in 1915. However the decorative work continued until 1926. Even Father Jacquet’s death in 1919 didn’t stop the project. His brother Anthony took over ensuring the vision was realized. Father Jacquet brought together a team of talented artists. This included the internationally renowned Maurice Denis. Denis painted the huge apse depicting the life of Saint Paul the church’s patron saint. He also designed cartoons for the stained glass windows. These windows feature saints of the region and are a tribute to Father Jacquet. Other artists like Alexandre Cingria Marcel Poncet and Georges de Traz also contributed their unique styles. Cingria’s Curé d’Ars window is particularly noteworthy. It tells the story of a French priest known for his radical spiritual transformation.

Sculptors and other artisans were also involved. Casimir Reymond crafted a statue of the Virgin and several bas-reliefs. François Bocquet created the Stations of the Cross. The Église Saint-Paul is more than a church. It is a stunning example of collaboration. This building is a showcase of twentieth-century sacred art. Its creators succeeded in combining modernity with tradition. The church was declared a historical monument in 1986. It serves as a reminder of the enduring power of artistic vision and religious faith. This remarkable building was the first twentieth century religious building to receive this honor in Geneva. The Église Saint-Paul stands as a testament to a dream realized through artistry dedication and perseverance. A testament well worth exploring.
