Founded in 1923 Saint Gregory the Great Parish initially held services in a chapel. This chapel belonged to the St Francis Home For Boys. A combined school and church were built in 1925. The school expanded in 1929. A gymnasium was added in 1937. A convent for the teaching sisters followed in 1951. The current church building stands proudly as a testament to faith. It was constructed between 1950 and 1952. Saint Gregory High School within the parish closed in 1969. It later served as a charter school and a community center. The parish has a rich history filled with countless stories of faith and community. Saint Gregory the Great played a vital role in the lives of many Detroit residents. It fostered a strong sense of belonging. Its doors welcomed thousands of worshippers for decades. Sadly in 2013 Saint Gregory merged with St Benedict to form St Moses the Black Parish. The last mass at Saint Gregory drew almost 1000 people. This showed the deep connection the parish had with its community. The church closed in July 2013. Hope Church began holding services in the building in 2018. Today the former Saint Gregory the Great Parish stands as a symbol of Detroit’s enduring faith. Though the original parish no longer exists its legacy lives on. The memories and bonds forged within its walls remain. Those who worshipped there hold dear the stories of Saint Gregory the Great. This place continues to inspire. It stands as a reminder of the strength of faith in Detroit.
