Can you imagine the life of a little village church before the year 1864? This is where we stand, in front of the Église Saint-Maurice in Veyrier. It’s a beautiful example of a 19th-century Roman Catholic church. It stands firmly on a small square, surrounded by charming houses. The Église Saint-Maurice wasn’t built in just one day. In fact, it took years to complete. The foundation stone was laid in 1865, but the church’s beginnings can be traced back to 1864 when the decision was made. Construction was in full swing and, the following year, the church was officially completed and consecrated. The original village church, located across the road, was demolished the year after in 1866. The interior of the church was decorated with stunning stained glass windows, crafted by the talented artist Abbé Pron, who lived in a village called Pont-d’Ain near the French border.
The church underwent several renovations throughout its lifetime. The first major transformation took place in 1897, when it was returned to the Roman Catholic community after a period of separation.
In 1917, the entrance was redesigned with a new tambour, a decorative element that added a touch of flair. The sacristy was also expanded and redesigned in 1919. Several years later, in 1922, a new campaign of renovations brought more change to the structure. The gallery was enlarged, a new, intricately sculpted, iron barrier was installed, and the ceilings and walls received a stunning new coat of paint, courtesy of the artist Joseph Falquet. The Église Saint-Maurice is a testament to a vibrant history and a deep connection to its local community.
