Could a name whisper tales of cheese, huts, and emperors? Here in Kasern, a district nestled in the northernmost embrace of Salzburg, the very ground seems to murmur with such stories. Kasern. The name itself is a riddle wrapped in an enigma. Some say it echoes the lowing of cows in alpine pastures, a nod to the Middle Latin “casaria,” meaning “hut.” Others believe it speaks of “caseus,” the Latin word for cheese, hinting at a history of cheesemaking in these once-marshy lands. One thing is certain: it has nothing to do with military barracks, despite the similar-sounding German word. Kasern’s story is a curious blend of industrial ambition and natural beauty. Until the late 19th century, Kasern was a scattering of farmsteads clinging to the slopes of the Plainberg. Then, in the 20th century, the clang of industry began to echo through the valley. The Oberascher bell foundry, fleeing fire hazards in Salzburg’s city center, arrived in 1919, its arrival a harbinger of Kasern’s transformation into a bustling commercial hub. A curious remnant of the foundry’s presence remains: a large fire-prevention pond, now a haven for wildlife known as the “Tümpel in Kasern.” Kasern’s annexation into Salzburg in 1939, along with parts of neighboring Bergheim and Hallwang, further cemented its industrial destiny. While the Plainberg was returned to Bergheim in 1950, Kasern remained part of Salzburg, its factories and businesses too intertwined with the city’s economy. Even today, the global crane manufacturer Palfinger calls Kasern home, a testament to the district’s ongoing commercial vitality. Look around. The modern buildings and busy roads hum with activity. But beneath the surface, echoes of the past linger. Imagine the farmers tending their fields, the rumble of the first trains on the Kaiserin Elisabeth-Bahn, and the fiery glow of the Oberascher foundry casting bells that resonated across the valley. Today, remnants of Kasern’s natural heritage survive amidst the industrial landscape. Protected pockets of greenery, like the Wickenburg-Allee, a linden tree avenue, and the Moorwäldchen, a small moor forest, offer a glimpse of the valley’s pre-industrial past. The Autobahn slices through the valley, its bridges and embankments a modern counterpoint to the gentle slopes of the Plainberg. Here, the past and present coexist, whispering tales of cheese, huts, industry, and the enduring allure of a place called Kasern.
