The church focuses on sharing life through the gospel. People from different regions and cultures come together.
Namu Church embraces several core values. Love is central. It is motivated by God’s love. Teamwork is essential. No one works alone. Sincerity is key. People share honestly from their hearts. Journeying together is valued over solely focusing on the destination.
The Namu Church’s mission is clear. It wants to make disciples. As a church, it aims to form new churches. Together in the gospel, members worship God. They build each other up. Saemoonan Church was the first organized church in Korea. It was founded on September 27, 1887. Reverend H.G. Underwood led its establishment. The first service had 14 baptized Korean Christians. It took place in a home in Chungdong, Seoul. One member was baptized. Two elders were appointed.
In its early years, Saemoonan Church met in a Korean-style house. This house was in front of Underwood’s residence. As the congregation grew, a new building was needed. It was built at the site of the present-day City Bank building. This is across from Gyeonghui Palace. In May 1910, the church relocated to its current location.
Saemoonan Church established branch churches. These churches were in Seoul and the surrounding Kyeonggi area. This fulfilled its role as a mother church.
Mario Botta designed the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary of Namyang. It is located in a vast green hilly area south of the city. Priest Lee Sanggak created an Urban Park. There are paths, rest areas, and processional routes. These are for meditation and prayer. The site features a valley along the south-north axis. It leads from the hill down to the city. Wooded slopes are on either side. A plateau sits in the center. The cathedral was built almost ten years after the project began.
This project aims to give new importance to human beings. It values spirituality and social participation. Lee calls it a Peace Park. The church wants to accentuate the best qualities. It aims to share these with fellow travelers. The project seeks to act concretely. It wants to transform the territory. It also wants to remember the Christian martyrs. These martyrs were killed during the Joseon Dynasty in the mid-nineteenth century.
So, as you stand here, remember the layers of history beneath your feet. From mountain pass to spiritual center, Namhyeon Church stands as a testament to faith and community in the heart of Seoul.
