From its humble beginnings in 1992 Alief Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and community. Pastor Donald G Burgs Jr had a vision a church in the Alief Community. With prayer planning and hard work the church grew. Early members included Gilbert Giles and their wives Berthinia Burgs and Erma Giles. They received assistance from Wilcrest Baptist Church and the Southern Baptist Convention. Nine souls joined the new church family.
For six months Alief Baptist shared a building with the Alief Church of the Nazarene. They later moved to 4134 South Kirkwood sharing space with Upper Room Fellowship Church. God blessed their efforts. In 1994 Reverend and Mrs Gilbert Giles helped them buy three acres on Cook Road. At 4134 South Kirkwood more than 500 people joined the church family. Pastor Burgs planned for church construction.
In 1998 Belleaire West Baptist Church went up for sale. Alief Baptist purchased the 30000 square foot building. It had 44 classrooms ten offices and a 700 seat sanctuary. All furnishings were included for $725000. They kept the Cook Road property too. This was an incredible feat. On September 1 1999 they moved into their new building. On that first Sunday 1700 people joined the congregation. Many ministries and departments began.
Alief Baptist Church received the 2004 Charles Haddon Spurgeon Award for Prayer History. The Billy Graham School of Evangelism presented this prestigious award. The Southern Baptist Convention ranked Alief Baptist among the top three percent of all Southern Baptist congregations. On October 25 2006 they paid off their mortgage eight years early. This was another great blessing from God.
On December 21 2006 they purchased First Baptist Church of Katy Texas for $18 million. This added more than 60000 square feet. The new facility seated 1500 people. It had a two-story family center a chapel 150 classrooms a satellite dish and five portable buildings on 3.5 acres. Alief Baptist now served both communities.
From three founding members and nine charter members Alief Baptist Church now boasts 3000 members. God has blessed them abundantly. They eagerly anticipate what God will do next. Alief Baptist Church’s journey is a powerful story of faith community and God’s remarkable provision.
