In 1832, a young toolmaker named Richard Hartmann arrived in Chemnitz with just two talers in his pocket. He began working for various factory owners, including Carl Gottlieb Haubold. This is now where we stand before the Richard-Hartmann-Halle. It stands as a testament to Hartmann’s remarkable journey. Hartmann quickly rose through the ranks. He went from journeyman to foreman. In 1837, he became a citizen of Chemnitz and started his own small workshop with a colleague. Just two years later, he partnered with August Götze to establish “Götze & Hartmann”. Hartmann focused on the technical side while Götze managed the business. A pivotal moment came when Hartmann acquired the rights to a slubbing frame, a type of wool spinning machine, for a mere 1000 talers. This machine became a cornerstone of his success. The company expanded rapidly. It moved to larger premises several times to accommodate its growing workforce and expanding product line. By 1844, Hartmann employed around 350 workers and had even established his own iron foundry. The Richard-Hartmann-Halle is a reminder of Hartmann’s contributions to the industrial landscape of Chemnitz. 1848 marked another milestone. Hartmann, along with Theodor Steinmetz, successfully manufactured their first steam locomotive. This venture received support from the Saxon state government, eager to develop a domestic locomotive industry. Hartmann’s locomotives soon rivaled English models. They were exported around the world. He became the primary supplier for the Royal Saxon State Railways. But Hartmann’s vision extended beyond locomotives. His company produced turbines, mining equipment, and heavy machine tools. In 1870, the company became the Sächsische Maschinenfabrik vormals Richard Hartmann AG, with Hartmann as chairman of the board. The Richard-Hartmann-Halle echoes this era of innovation and growth. Hartmann’s legacy continues to inspire. He transformed Chemnitz into a major industrial center. His story, embodied in the Richard-Hartmann-Halle, reminds us of the power of ingenuity and hard work.
