Established in 1938 New Caney High School has evolved. It started as a small school with only nine students in its first graduating class. The original building still stands today. It now serves as the district’s Learning Center, police department, and emergency operations center.
The high school was once located on the southbound side of Interstate 69 in Porter. Tragedy struck when the building burned down in the 1980s. In 1987 the campus moved to its current location in New Caney. The former Porter building became New Caney Middle School. It is now known as White Oak Middle School.
New Caney High School is part of the New Caney Independent School District. This district serves several cities and communities. These include Roman Forest, Woodbranch, and parts of Porter Heights. The district also serves the unincorporated communities of Porter and New Caney.
Today New Caney High School is a 6A school. It boasts a student body of over 2,000. The school has received recognition for several programs. These include JROTC, band, journalism, DECA and Academic Decathlon. New Caney High School offers a wide range of opportunities for students. These include Advanced Placement courses, athletics, and career and technology courses. Students can also participate in dual credit programs and the National Honor Society.
In the past New Caney High School faced challenges. Between 1983 and 1987 the varsity football team struggled. They lost 43 consecutive games. The losing streak finally ended with a 13-6 win over St Thomas High School. The team continued to struggle until the mid-1990s. A turnaround came with a change in coaching staff. The school moved into the 4A division allowing for better competition.
The Academic Decathlon team at New Caney High School has an impressive record. They have won their regional competition every year since 1996. They have also consistently achieved success at the state competition. In 2008 the team finished second at the state competition. They defeated rival Friendswood High School.
The Broadcast Journalism program has also gained recognition. It became part of the Channel One television network in 2003. The program produced a segment about the 2004 presidential election. It reached 9.5 million students. In 2006 New Caney won seven UIL Broadcast Journalism awards.
New Caney High School has a diverse student body. As of 2021-2022 the student population was 2,245. The ethnic distribution includes African American, Asian, Hispanic, White, and Two or More Races. A significant percentage of students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.
The school is committed to providing a quality education. It strives to prepare students for success in college and beyond. New Caney High School alumni have gone on to achieve great things. Notable alumni include Adam Dunn a professional baseball player. Robert Crippen a former NASA astronaut and Jason Sundance Head winner of The Voice.
New Caney High School continues to be a source of pride for the community. It upholds its motto Eagles Fly Strong and Proud. The school remains dedicated to soaring above and beyond the best.
