Gazing upon Château de Vésenaz, one might hear whispers of its intriguing past. This stately castle, nestled in Collonge-Bellerive, Geneva, has witnessed centuries of history unfold. Château de Vésenaz’s story begins in 1448. Pierre Curt, seeking a grand residence, chose this very spot, transforming previous dwellings into the fortified house we see today. The Château de Vésenaz wasn’t meant to be a fortress in times of war. It served as a stately home, a symbol of Curt’s status. Over the years, Château de Vésenaz changed hands. It became home to notable figures. Among them were the widow of Geneva’s syndic, Nantermet Festi, around 1473. The merchant François Favre also owned the property between 1544 and 1551. Later, Barthélémy-Robert Vaudenet took possession in 1697. The Château de Vésenaz continued its journey through time, passing through various families. Many of them carried the Vésenaz name, linking their lineage to this historic place. This continued until the late 20th century when it was recognized for its historical significance. The building itself is a testament to Gothic architecture. A striking feature is the northern tower. It houses a spiral staircase, once crowned with a pointed roof. This roof, sadly, disappeared during renovations in 1892, replaced by a cement balustrade. The Château de Vésenaz, once part of the Gaillard seigneury, stands tall. Its high silhouette, topped by a large hipped roof, dominates the landscape. Sturdy buttresses reinforce its structure, whispering tales of bygone eras. Remnants of a small enclosure, once adorned with turrets, still linger. Farm buildings, one dated 1781, now stand against these ancient walls. The vestiges of another tower, boasting large windows, now form part of an esplanade. Château de Vésenaz isn’t just a building. It’s a living chronicle. It connects us to Geneva’s rich past.
